I preached on this song to 412 last night. This song has been a great camp/youth group anthem. I have used it as a “feel good” “hype” or “fun” song. But since the birth of Josiah & his medical issues…it has taken a different approach to my spirit. It is hard to trade our sorrows, shame, sickness, & pain….for the joy of the Lord. It’s even harder to lay them down. But what’s so cool, is the Lord is our strength. The sorrow only last for a season, but His Joy will last forever.

Kid Rock & Youth Ministry…who would’ve thunk it!

This is to funny! I purchased the semi-new Kid Rock album, “Rock & Roll Jesus” today at our friendly walmart store. I used to listen to Kid when I was in college and walked past the album, and thought…what the heck. Once listening to the album…I remembered why I haven’t listened to him that much any more! But after fighting the many layers of plastic and tape, I discovered a great quote inside the booklet…..

Little Things Kill!

One of my favorite songs as a teenager was by a group called, “Bush”. The title of the song was, “little things kill”. I wouldn’t play it for youth group, but it has a great message in it.

Dave Matthews, God, & Grey Street

Dave Matthews Band is prob. my favorite secular band out there. Regardless, if you disagree or agree with Dave stances on life issues…his music is incredible and deep. I was on the drive to work today thinking about the youth at 412. I wonder what would happen if they actually saw God for all that He is (actually, I wonder what would happen if I did the same sometimes!). While I was in deep thought, “Grey Street” came on the iPod. I decided to really listen to the lyrics to the song and it amazed me.

I am in the my office working on a lesson for youth group tomorrow night and rocking out to TOBYMAC. He has a new album out, and it’s a live cd. I love it! I remember listening to dcTalk way back in the day of “Heavenbound” and “NU Thing”. I credit those albums to some of my foundational faith (thanks Kenn for showing me Christian music!). There is one song that he does on the new album, “In the light” which is one of the most honest worship songs out there. “I want to be in the Light, as you are in the light. I want to shine like the stars in the heavens. Oh, Lord be my light and be my salvation, cause all I want is to be in the light”. How pure is that?! There is nothing better than walking along side God is there? The times that I have walked away from the “light”, those times were hard. Sometimes I didn’t realize that I was doing it, other times were just flat out rebellion. But when I get close to the light again, get close to God…I get peace. No matter what is going on around me, walking with God is so much better. Life doesn’t get easier, but I have a Daddy that will never let me go! Check out 1 John 1:5 that talks about being in the light!

Look it’s a bird, no it’s a plane, no it’s ….GOD?!

God is less than a breath away from you. He is above you. He is below you. He is beside you. He is around the corner. He is in your house. He is in your car. He is at the bus stop waiting to board with you. God is present during the 3rd inning of your softball game. God is standing in line with you at the chinese buffet. How crazy is that? The creator…….is with…….you. That’s how much He loves us. Matt Singleton preached two years ago at a 412 camp, that God is less than a breath away from you. He put his hand to his mouth & said that’s how close God is. I’ve never forgotten that nugget. We were made by Him, because He loves us. We were made to love Him back. It’s simple, really. But so simple it’s complex to understand for me. How could this be? Am I worthy of such a love? Nope. Did I earn that love? Nope. Can I leave that love? Nope. Psalm 139:1-12 talks about this. Last night, one of the 412 leaders showed me an awesome video by Tobymac, “Made to Love” that talks about the concept of God being everywhere with us and loving us. Check out the funny video here. Bottom line is this, God will never leave us or forget about us, because He loves us. Chew on that for a few minutes! Don’t just take a bite and move on with you day, instead let it flood your senses and embrace it!
